Almost all of the ski-in ski-out hotels at Big Sky sit at one base, and the mountain's signature green run ends at their doorstep — so a first-timer really can ski home here. We checked every claim in both directions, and untangled the tram rule that costs pass holders money.

The short version

  • Five properties pass the strict test, and four of them stand on the same plaza: The Summit, Village Center, Huntley Lodge and Shoshone at Mountain Village, plus Montage over at Spanish Peaks with a lift on its own land.
  • Mr. K is the reason to stay in Mountain Village. Big Sky's classic green runs top-to-bottom and finishes at that plaza, so a genuine beginner can ski home — something the Empire Passes and Peak 7s of this world cannot offer.
  • The tram rule is counter-intuitive and it costs money. A day lift ticket includes unlimited Lone Peak Tram rides. An Ikon Pass does not — pass holders enable Autocharge and pay roughly $10 to $40 a ride, at a rate posted each morning.
  • Beginners cannot base-hop on skis here. Crossing between Mountain Village, Madison and Spanish Peaks on green terrain is not practical, so pick one base and stay with it.
  • In our 20–23 January price check, Village Center at $363 was the cheapest genuine slopeside bed, undercutting several properties that only reach the lifts by shuttle.

The two columns that decide what ski-in ski-out at Big Sky actually means for your morning: how you reach a lift, and which run brings you home. At this resort the answer is unusually often a green one.

None of these appear on a hotel listing, and each one changes what slopeside is worth here.

One base only

No green base-hopping

Crossing between Mountain Village, Madison and Spanish Peaks on green terrain is not practical. Beginners should pick one base and stay with it.

Condos: the rest of Mountain Village's slopeside beds

Beyond the resort's own hotels, Mountain Village is ringed by condo buildings booked through rental managers. They buy kitchen space and, in a couple of cases, a better ski-back than the hotels have.

Beaverhead is the standout: White Wing is a named green that runs to the building, which no hotel on this page can claim.

One base does almost all the work

Big Sky is enormous — 5,850 acres across three connected mountains — but its slopeside lodging is concentrated almost entirely in one place. Four of the five properties that pass our test stand on the same Mountain Village snowfront.

That concentration is a gift for a first trip. The lifts are fast, the ticket window and rental shop are in the buildings, and three green runs — Mr. K, Lower Morning Star and Lois Lane — all finish at the plaza. Sacajawea into Pacifier does the same job from the Andesite side.

It also sets the boundary of what you can do on skis. Sources are explicit that beginners should not try to base-hop: crossing to Madison or Spanish Peaks on green terrain is not practical, so the base you book is the base you ski from.

A wording nuance worth knowing, because it is the resort's own: Big Sky says 'slopeside access' for Huntley, the Summit and Shoshone, but 'direct access to the slopes' for Village Center, whose Ski Studio patios open onto the snow. Only Montage has a lift base station physically on its property.

The tram rule, and other things a listing will not tell you

The single most expensive misunderstanding at Big Sky has nothing to do with hotels. The 75-passenger Lone Peak Tram is included with a day lift ticket — the separate charge was dropped from the 2024/25 season. It is not included with any pass.

Ikon, Ikon Base, Ikon Session, Mountain Collective and Big Sky's own Freestyle pass all require you to enable Autocharge and pay per ride, at a rate that floats between about $10 and $40 depending on the day and is posted after 9 a.m. on the resort's conditions page. Scenic rides cost less than ski laps.

So the arithmetic can invert: for a short trip built around the summit, a day ticket may cost less than a pass plus tram fees. That is not a distinction any hotel listing will make for you.

Getting around, and where the day actually goes wrong

Bozeman airport is about an hour away, an hour spent driving US-191 through Gallatin Canyon and then up Lone Mountain Trail. In a storm that road, not the mountain, is what shapes your day.

Once you are here the free Skyline bus does more than most resort shuttles: it links Town Center, the Meadow and Mountain Village all winter, which is what makes the cheaper valley hotels genuinely usable. The trade is that Mountain Village has very little to do after skiing, while Town Center has the restaurants and no snow.

Five: The Summit Hotel, Village Center, Huntley Lodge and Shoshone Condominium Hotel at Mountain Village, plus Montage Big Sky at Spanish Peaks, which is the only one with a lift base station on its own property. Is One&Only Moonlight Basin ski-in ski-out?
Not literally, and it does not need to be. You store gear and boot up at the public Sky Lodge, then ride a private heated glass gondola about five minutes down to the Madison base and Madison 8. Coming home you ski to that base — Cinnabar off Derringer is the easy option — and ride the gondola up. We file it as gondola-served. Full verdict here.
How much do ski-in ski-out hotels at Big Sky cost?
In our 20–23 January price check, the genuinely slopeside five ran from $363 at Village Center and $379 at Huntley through $405 at The Summit and $760 at Shoshone to $1,629 at Montage. Several shuttle properties cost more than the cheapest slopeside beds, which is unusual.
Mountain Village or Town Center?
Mountain Village if the skiing is the point: four slopeside properties, the lifts and the ski school, and Mr. K bringing everyone home. Town Center if the evenings matter — The Wilson puts restaurants, a brewery and a cinema on the doorstep, seven miles below the snow, with a free bus that runs to 11 p.m. Mountain Village is quiet after the lifts stop.
When does Big Sky open for 2026/27?
Opening day is 25 November 2026, with daily operations through 11 April 2027 and bonus weekends on 16-18 and 23-25 April if conditions allow. The free Skyline winter bus service brackets the same window, running 23 November to 25 April.
Do you need a car at Big Sky?
Not if you stay at Mountain Village or take an airport transfer.
