Sun Valley is two mountains a mile and a half apart, and the famous hotels are at the small one. Bald Mountain — 2,533 acres and 3,400 vertical feet — has no hotel at River Run and none at Warm Springs, so the honest count of slopeside hotels here is zero, and not one of the eleven properties in this harvest claims otherwise.

The short version

  • The cheapest hotel in this harvest is the closest one to the real mountain. Best Western Tyrolean Lodge sits about 670 yards from Bald Mountain's River Run base at $223 a night, while the Sun Valley Lodge is 1.80 miles away at roughly double the price. Ketchum's geography inverts the usual rule that money buys access.
  • No hotel is ski-in/ski-out at Sun Valley, and none of the eleven even claims to be. There is no hotel at River Run and no hotel at Warm Springs — Bald Mountain's two bases are day lodges on the edge of Ketchum. Like Banff, this is a place where the marketing is honest because the geography leaves no room to lie.
  • Sun Valley Village is not slopeside either, and that is the correction most guides miss. The Village sits by Dollar Mountain, the 296-acre beginner hill, not by Baldy — and it is about 0.52 miles from the Dollar base, which Google's own blurb calls 'a 14-minute walk'. Near Dollar, shuttle to Baldy, slopeside to neither.
  • Two listings on this page argue with themselves. Wood River Inn opens 'Set in the Sun Valley Ski Area' and then admits '11 miles from the ski slopes in Ketchum'; Hotel Ketchum is listed as '7 miles from Bald Mountain' when it is 0.83 miles from the River Run base.
  • The only genuine slopeside beds on Baldy are condominiums, not hotels: International Village and The Hemingways at Warm Springs, Pennay's at River Run. None appears in a hotel harvest, and Pennay's own site sends a sleigh to collect guests at the River Run Bridge — which quietly undercuts the ski-back half of its own claim.
  • Beginners get the opposite answer to everywhere else on this site. A beginner can sleep beside the hill they will actually ski, at Dollar or Elkhorn, while an expert cannot sleep at Baldy at all. The catch is the Elkhorn triple: no snowmaking, east-facing, and described by PeakRankings as 'rarely open'.
  • One pass fact decides some trips before lodging does: the Ikon Base Pass gives no access to Sun Valley whatsoever, in the resort's own words. The full Ikon gives seven days.

Distances are straight-line, computed from each hotel's harvested coordinates to River Run Plaza, the Warm Springs Day Lodge and the Dollar Mountain Lodge, and are published as 'about'. This is the building people picture when they picture skiing in Idaho — America's first destination ski resort, opened in 1936, with the ice rink, the spa and the Opera House outside the door — and it is not slopeside to either mountain. Half a mile from Dollar, the 296-acre beginner hill; 1.80 miles and a bus from Bald Mountain, where the skiing is.
  • Read what it does not say. The resort's own lodging page names no run, no lift and no yardage, and never uses the words ski-in or ski-out. Visit Sun Valley's tag for it is 'Closest to Dollar Mountain'. On most resort pages this site exists to separate marketing from geography; here there is nothing to separate.
  • No nightly rate came back for our 20–23 January 2027 check and no OTA row appeared either, because Village rooms are booked through sunvalley.com rather than the hotel-price feeds — the harvested 4.4 from 44 reviews is a thin sample for a landmark this size, and the resort's umbrella Google entity carries a much larger 4.7 from 1,482. Treat both as reported and price the stay on the resort's own site.

  • No rate came back for our January dates and no OTA quoted it, for the same reason as the Lodge: the resort sells its own rooms. That thin data says nothing about the building and everything about how Sun Valley distributes inventory.
  • The review topics that exist are small but consistent — property 13 positive to 3, service 10 to 5, location 5 to zero. What you are buying is the Village, and the Village's own value proposition is a beginner hill, an ice rink and a free bus to the real mountain.

The Villa Fleuve listing gives a Hailey address with coordinates in Gimlet, eight miles north of it, so we publish no distance for it at all.

Mountain Rides — the reason staying off-mountain works here, and it is public transit rather than a hotel shuttle. Blaine County's authority runs fare-free electric buses seven days a week, all year, linking Bellevue, Hailey, Ketchum and Sun Valley. The Blue Route alone connects Elkhorn Springs, Dollar Mountain, Sun Valley Village and the Lodge, Ketchum, the River Run Lodge and Warm Springs — every base and every lodging pocket on this page. The resort's own transport — sunvalley.com describes regular round trips from the Village to both Dollar and Bald Mountains and to Ketchum and Elkhorn Springs, plus courtesy transport for resort guests through Bell Service on 208-622-2122, by reservation. A free airport shuttle is included for guests staying at the resort.

Hotel shuttles — Knob Hill Inn, the Tyrolean and the Kentwood all list an area shuttle, and the un-harvested Limelight Hotel Ketchum runs a free skier shuttle to River Run reported by guests at every 15 minutes. Confirm winter operating hours when you book; several are seasonal.

Friedman Memorial (SUN) — 14 miles from the resort by sunvalley.com's own figure, roughly 20 to 30 minutes' drive, with reported nonstop winter service from San Francisco, Seattle, Los Angeles, San Diego, Denver, Salt Lake City, Chicago and Phoenix. That is closer than almost any comparable western resort, and it is why three hotels in this harvest sit in Hailey.

Ikon Base Pass

No access at all

In the resort's own words: 'Ikon Base Pass: No Access' and 'Ikon Base Pass holders do not receive access to Sun Valley or Snowbasin.' The full Ikon Pass gives up to seven days of unrestricted access, plus 15 Friends & Family discounts of 25% off day window tickets — and once those seven days are used there is no discount on further visits. No blackout dates and no reservation requirement are published.

The two-ticket trap

A Dollar ticket is not valid on Baldy

The resort's own ticket page states that Bald Mountain tickets are valid for skiing on Bald and Dollar Mountain, while Dollar Mountain tickets are not valid on Bald Mountain. A family that buys the cheap Dollar ticket for the children cannot move them across to the big mountain on the same ticket, and the two hills are a mile and a half apart.

Parking and the bus

Both free

The resort states that skiers may park free in the upper lots on the River Run side and that the main Warm Springs lot down Gates Road is completely free — a real differentiator against Colorado and Wyoming. Mountain Rides buses are fare-free year-round, seven days a week. Event weeks are the exception: during the Stifel Sun Valley Finals in March there is no public parking at Warm Springs and free shuttles replace it.

Snowmaking

About 645 acres, 578 guns

Roughly 645 acres covered across Bald and Dollar Mountains by about 578 snow guns fed by some 38 miles of underground steel pipe, with cooling fans, pumps, weather stations and a central control system. The resort and local press call it the largest system in the world; we publish the figures and leave the ranking as their claim. It is why a mountain with 172 to 200 reported inches a year opens near Thanksgiving.

Condos: the only genuine ski-in/ski-out beds at Sun Valley are not hotels

Bald Mountain does have doors on the snow. They are condominium buildings, individually owned and let one unit at a time by rental managers, which is exactly why Google's hotel data returns none of them and why the honest hotel answer on this page is zero. At the Warm Springs base, International Village is described by its rental managers as ski-in/ski-out 'just 300 feet from the Warm Springs Lodge and ski lifts', with the Challenger and Greyhawk lifts outside and the 1.8-mile Warm Springs run coming home to the day lodge; one local guide calls it 'the only ski-in/ski-out condos' at that base. The Hemingways, an eight-unit fractional residence club at the same base, says on its own site that it is 'adjacent to the Warm Springs base of the famous Bald Mountain' with 'the thrill and ease of ski-in and ski-out living'. Both cannot be the only one, so we publish both as the properties' own words.

At River Run, Pennay's at River Run claims ski-in/ski-out at 'just 200 yards from the River Run Lodge and Gondola', roughly nineteen units on the Big Wood River four minutes' walk from downtown Ketchum. The detail that tells you the most is in their own copy: they send a sleigh to collect guests at the River Run Bridge between 3 p.m. and 4 p.m., weather and conditions permitting. A property that sends a sleigh for you at the end of the day is telling you the last 200 yards are not skied. Call it ski-out plus a ride home.

On the Dollar side the language gets looser and the caveat gets bigger. Snowcreek and Dollar Meadows are marketed as being on Dollar's doorstep, and their own agents describe Dollar Meadows as 'within a 15-minute walk' — a walk, published as such by the people renting it. Elkhorn Village genuinely does have condos beside a lift, and that lift is the Elkhorn triple: no snowmaking, east-facing, and the pocket that PeakRankings dismisses in one line as 'all at the Elkhorn base, which is rarely open'. Book an Elkhorn ski-in/ski-out condo in early December or late March and you may be buying a walk to a stopped chair.

None of these is in the hotel harvest, none can be booked through the Expedia links on this page, and the distances quoted are the properties' own or their managers'. The exact street address of International Village was not found in anything read here, and its '300 feet' is a rental manager's figure rather than the building association's. Checked August 2026.

Why no hotel stands at a Bald Mountain base

Start with the mountain, because it explains the whole page. Bald Mountain — Baldy to everyone here — is 2,533 acres and 3,400 vertical feet, from a 5,750-foot base to a 9,150-foot summit, with a reputation for having no flats and no plateaus and a signature run, Warm Springs, that descends 1.8 uninterrupted miles to its day lodge. It is the reason people fly to Idaho. It also has exactly two bases, River Run and Warm Springs, and both of them sit on the edge of the town of Ketchum rather than in a purpose-built base village. There is no hotel at either. Every property that markets itself on Baldy is a Ketchum street address that walks or rides to a lift.

That produces a result you almost never see at a major resort: of the eleven properties this harvest returned, not one carries a ski-in/ski-out claim. Every `ski_in_ski_out_claimed` field is false and every `ski_claims` array is empty. The Best Western Tyrolean Lodge says '11-minute walk'. Tamarack Lodge says 'a mile from both the Dollar Mountain ski area and the resort town of Sun Valley'. The resort's own page for the Sun Valley Lodge says 'just off of Sun Valley Road' and names no run and no lift. The only other page on this site that reads like this is Banff, where federal park law caps the slopeside stock at a single 84-room hotel. Two very different causes, the same result: in both places the marketing is honest because the geography leaves no room to lie.

So the question stops being 'which hotel is slopeside' and becomes 'how far is the walk'. That turns out to be the useful question, because the answer inverts what you would expect. The Tyrolean, one of the cheapest rooms here at $223, is about 670 yards from River Run Plaza. The Kentwood is 0.68 miles, Hotel Ketchum 0.83, Tamarack 0.86, and the Knob Hill Inn — the highest-rated and most expensive bed in Ketchum at $430 — is the farthest at 1.06 miles. Every hotel in Ketchum is inside a mile of Baldy, and the price ladder runs almost exactly backwards to the distance ladder.

Two listings on this page contradict themselves badly enough to move a booking, and both deserve naming. Wood River Inn opens its description with 'Set in the Sun Valley Ski Area' and then, two clauses later, admits '11 miles from the ski slopes in Ketchum' — the second half is right, and the hotel is in Hailey. Hotel Ketchum is listed as '7 miles from Bald Mountain' when it stands 0.83 miles from Baldy's River Run base; that is a geocoding artefact measured to some other point on the mountain, and it is the kind of number that talks a reader out of the right hotel.

Sun Valley Village is near Dollar, not on it — and the beginner inversion

The obvious correction to make about Sun Valley is that the Village is at the small mountain. The less obvious one, and the more useful, is that the Village is not slopeside to the small mountain either. Computed from the harvest's own coordinates to the Dollar Mountain Lodge, the Sun Valley Lodge is about 0.83 km — 0.52 miles — from the Dollar base, and the Sun Valley Inn about 0.89 km, or 0.55 miles. Google's own blurb on the Lodge puts it plainly: 'a 14-minute walk from Dollar Mountain ski lift'. A 14-minute walk is a walk. The honest one-line summary of the most famous address in Idaho skiing is: near Dollar, shuttle to Baldy, slopeside to neither.

Now the inversion, which makes this resort genuinely unusual. On almost every other page on this site, the slopeside beds serve confident skiers and beginners are the ones commuting. Here it is the reverse. A beginner can very nearly sleep beside the hill they will actually ski — Dollar's terrain, Carol's Dollar Mountain Lodge and Sunny's Adventure Park are half a mile from the Village door, and the Elkhorn pocket sits beside Dollar's southern pod — while an expert cannot sleep at Baldy at all, because nobody can. Dollar itself is a proper learning hill: 296 acres, 628 vertical feet, treeless, with the Dollar high-speed quad running base to summit in under three minutes, plus the Quarter Dollar quad and the Half Dollar double, and Sepp's as the green worth knowing by name.

The catch on the Dollar side is stated bluntly by PeakRankings and it is the reason we grade every Elkhorn ski-in/ski-out claim as conditional: 'Dollar Mountain does have a few lodging options directly neighboring the mountain, but there is a huge catch — they're all at the Elkhorn base, which is rarely open.' The Elkhorn triple has no snowmaking and faces east, so its openings vary from season to season and week to week. Beds beside a lift that may not be spinning are not slopeside beds in any sense you can plan a holiday around, and the resort publishes no reliability statement either way.

A beginner can still ski to a Bald Mountain base — the greens exist and they are long — they just start there rather than finishing at a bedroom. Lower River Run comes off the River Run lift straight from the plaza, wide and groomed, finishing at the River Run Lodge, and it is described as the easiest trail on the mountain apart from the Kinderspielplatz carpet. College is called one of the longest green runs in America, with the reported all-green route running Upper College into Sunset Strip, then 42nd Street, then Lower River Run to the base — one guide rates Upper College blue, so treat that as a long green descent rather than a verified rating. On the far side, the Warm Springs run starts blue and eases to green about halfway through its 1.8 miles down to the day lodge. Mid-mountain, Seattle Ridge is a north-facing shelf of green runs named after local Olympians, Gretchen's Gold among them — a warm-up, not a route to a bed. One warning worth carrying into all of it: several guides note that Sun Valley rates its trails harder than the American average, so a Baldy green skis like another resort's easy blue.

Tickets, the Ikon trap and getting to the two mountains

Sun Valley publishes nothing for 2026/27, and that is worth knowing before you plan around a number you read somewhere. The resort's own lift-ticket page shows winter 2026-27 as 'Off-Sale' with no price at all, directing buyers to shop.sunvalley.com or (888) 490-5950. None. There is no hotel at River Run and no hotel at Warm Springs, Bald Mountain's only two bases, and not one of the eleven properties in this harvest claims ski-in/ski-out — every listing's ski-claim field is empty. The closest hotel bed to Baldy is Best Western Tyrolean Lodge, about 670 yards from River Run Plaza. The only genuinely slopeside beds on the mountain are condominiums: International Village and The Hemingways at Warm Springs, and Pennay's at River Run.
Is the Sun Valley Lodge ski-in ski-out?
No, and it has never said it is. The Sun Valley Lodge stands in Sun Valley Village beside Dollar Mountain, the 296-acre beginner hill — about 0.52 miles from the Dollar base, which Google's own blurb calls 'a 14-minute walk', and 1.80 miles from Bald Mountain's River Run base. The resort's own lodging page says only 'Located in the heart of Sun Valley, just off of Sun Valley Road' and names no run and no lift. Near Dollar, shuttle to Baldy, slopeside to neither.
Is it cheaper to stay closer to the mountain at Sun Valley?
Yes, which is the reverse of most ski towns. Best Western Tyrolean Lodge is the closest hotel to Bald Mountain at about 670 yards from the River Run base and was $223 for our 20–23 January 2027 check, while the Knob Hill Inn — the farthest Ketchum hotel from Baldy at 1.06 miles — was $430, and the Sun Valley Lodge sits 1.80 miles away. Best Western Plus Kentwood Lodge at $197 is 0.68 miles out. Every hotel in Ketchum is within a mile of the mountain.
Can a beginner ski back to their hotel at Sun Valley?
Almost, and only at the small mountain — which is the opposite of how this usually works. Dollar Mountain's base is about half a mile from the Sun Valley Lodge and the Sun Valley Inn, and the Elkhorn condos sit beside Dollar's southern pod, so a beginner can sleep next to the hill they will ski while an expert cannot sleep at Baldy at all.
